Curling, it’s a passion!

Curling - mitts & broomCurling for life!

I can remember seeing them pace back and forth in the clubroom, hold their breath for that game winning shot, and beam with pride as I came off the ice win or lose.  Over the years a lot of family and friends have watched me curl but without a doubt my parents are my number one fans.

Now, I am no professional curler.  The highlight of my 22-year curling career so far has been that I made it to the high school curling provincials, once!  I don’t know how my parents could even bare to watch some of the games I have played over the years.  But, despite my lack of competitive success on the ice I still love the game and I owe that love to my family.

Curling: it’s in my blood

My whole family; sisters, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins all have a passion for curling.  My parents, curlers themselves, put in countless hours driving me around the province to games, clinics and bonspiels.  My aunt and my uncle where my coaches in my younger years and I have recently enjoyed watching my cousins compete at the Scott Tournament of Hearts.  And, although I was only 8 at the time I am proud to say that 1989 Team Canada skip and World Champion, Heather Houston, is my 2nd cousin.  So you can kind of say curling in my blood.

Curl for fun!

For now I will stick to my Tuesday night ladies league, and the fun of small town bonspiels.  A highlight for me is still looking up to see the faces of my fans on the other side of the glass.  My newest fans are my four and one year old who love to yell ,“Good cleaning! Good cleaning!” as I sweep the rock down the ice.   I look forward to some day watching them from behind the glass and being their number one fan.

Canola Junior Curling Provincial Championships

Canola Junior ChampsionshipsWorking for the Manitoba Canola Growers, I now get to enjoy curling from a whole new point of view as the title sponsors of the Canola Junior Curling Provincial Championships.  Over the next 5 days I will be one of the fans behind the glass at the Brandon Curling Club to cheer on the 16 Junior Men’s and 16 Junior Women’s rinks at this years event.  I look forward to sitting in the clubroom with the fans as they pace back and forth, hold their breath for that game winning shot and beam with pride as their team comes off the ice win or lose.
