Myth: There is no difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist.

Nutrition Month Myth Busting

March is Nutrition Month

A time to reflect on eating habits, to celebrate the nutritious food we can access in Canada and most importantly it’s time to bust some top nutrition myths.

Each week we will be sharing a top myth from the Dietitians of Canada and a recipe created in partnership with Heart and Stroke. Knowledge is power and when we can learn together we can grow together.

Do you use a Dietitian?

March 18 is National Dietitians Day.  Did you know that in Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia a Dietitian is at your finger tips?  You can dial-a-dietitian for free to help you from your home.

Let’s celebrate these professionals in our communities and help them bust a couple of myths about their profession.

You can also enjoy the recipe below for Chicken and Sweet Potato Quesadilla with Salsa created in partnership with Emily Richards, RD and Heart & Stroke.

Myth: There is no difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist.

Warm Rice Noodle and Tofu Salad with Toasted Pumpkin Seeds|www.canolaeatwell.comTHE TRUTH: Dietitians are one of a kind; they are uniquely trained to advise you on food, healthy eating and nutrition.

Dietitians must be part of a regulatory body, just like doctors, pharmacists and nurses. The terms “Registered Dietitian,” “Professional Dietitian” and “Dietitian” are protected by law.

Only qualified health professionals can legally use those titles. In many provinces, there are no laws to protect the title “nutritionist.” When in doubt, check http://www.dietitians.ca/Career/Registration-to-Practice.aspx. A dietitian is your smart choice for credible advice on healthy eating.

Myth: Dietitians only eat healthy foods – never chocolate, fries, chips or candy.

Chocolate |www.canolaeatwell.comTHE TRUTH: No way! Dietitians eat all sorts of different foods, even chocolate, french fries, chips and candy…on occasion.

Dietitians are nutrition experts with university degrees in food and nutrition. Dietitians have a real passion for nutrition, health and food.

Just like anyone else, we enjoy foods that make our taste buds tingle! Dietitians believe that healthy foods are delicious foods. And we also believe that there’s nothing wrong with the occasional treat.
