What We’re Lovin for July

Summer Country Fairs

Calgary Stampede | www.canolaeatwell.comWorking as a consultant when my kids were young, meant doing many different things. And that included judging bench show classes at a variety of fairs. So Saturday mornings, my husband and I would pack up the girls and drive to whichever Agricultural Society had hired me for that day.

Upon arrival, I would start to work, and the rest of the family wandered towards the free pancake breakfast. Then they’d find a ‘great’ spot to watch the local parade where the kids could scramble for the candy that was thrown into the crowd from the passing floats.

July is fair time in many parts of Canada. Each is unique, and yet they all follow a set rhythm.  It’s a wonderful time to reconnect with agriculture, the sun, and some of the memories of our youth!

And yes, I’m still involved in fairs – but now in a big way.  So if you’re at the Calgary Stampede this summer, drop by the Agrium Western Showcase Building, look for the canola learning centre and say ‘hi!’

The Outdoors

Heart Hands Canola Field | www.canolaeatwell.comGet outside! Play and connect with nature.  Our family loves the outdoors.  We camp in a tent! We love going for walks, hiking in the woods, exploring at the park and in our backyard.

Connecting with nature is one of my best ways to distress and be in a space of “awe”. Nature is amazing, from watching the birds, bees and even the squirrels (I do not like them at all) and near our house we often see a fox!

I think my love of nature is captured in this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson “Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.”

July is also the perfect month for a country drive to see the canola fields in full bloom.  Share your photos with us using #FarmToFood on twitter.  We’d love to see you!

Keen Sandals

Keen Sandals | www.canolaeatwell.comMy family of boys love Keens.  It’s often hard to find, functional, stylish, safe yet durable footwear for boys.

These Keen sandals get wet, get muddy, hit the washer and do it all over again.  Would you know that the green pair on the left are on it’s third pair of feet and will be heading to a fourth?

If you are on the hunt to keep those tiny toes in your family comfy be sure to check out a Keen retailer near you!
