Get Caught Fishing

Travel Manitoba is launching a new program this summer called Get Caught Fishing! Prizes will be awarded to Manitobans who get caught catching (or trying to catch) fish this summer. The goal is to raise the profile of recreational fishing in Manitoba focusing on accessibility, diversity and conservation.

Instant prizes will be awarded by Fishing Ambassadors in Gimli, Selkirk, Lockport and at The Forks in Winnipeg.  Or to qualify for some fabulous prizes, upload a photo with your winning catch to TravelManitoba.com/GetCaughtFishing (live June 8). Prizes include a catfishing trip on the Red River courtesy of City Cats, a shore lunch prize pack valued at $500 from Manitoba Canola Growers and gift cards from Cabela’s.

Pan Fried Pickerel | www.blog.canolarecipes.ca

You can have your own shore lunch with the fresh walleye that you just caught or if you got skunked, you can still have a fish fry with frozen or fresh fish fillets from the grocery store.  Watch for my post in June when I share 5 simple tips to pan fry your fish in the meantime you can check out our Pan Fried Pickerel Recipe to get you started.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb

Every year I anxiously wait for my rhubarb to pop out of the ground so I can bake it into crisps, cakes, pies and the like.  My Grandma made the best rhubarb custard pie and it makes my mouth tart just thinking about it!

Local urban gardener, cookbook author and Professional Home Economist Getty Stewart shared a fantastic Rhubarb Honey Bran Muffins with us last spring and I’ve dug it out of the archives to share with you all again.  If you don’t have a copy of Getty’s book it’s a must read for anyone who loves to cook and bake with local Prairie Fruit.  You find a listing of where to purchase her book or you can order a copy from Getty’s site.

Fresh Herbs

I just love planting herbs.  They are so fragrant, fresh and delicious.  This year I have parsley, chives, rosemary, basil, oregano, thyme, sage, dill and cilantro.  If you are new to fresh herbs or need some inspiration on how to pair which herb with what then check out Ellen’s Herb Flavour Chart.  It gives you ideas on how to use the most common herbs found in our Manitoba gardens. You might also want to check out Chef Mary Jane’s Pair It Up Parsley Sauce that can be used as a dip, sauce, salad topper, marinade or let your imagination run wild!

What’s your favourite herb contest

Leave a comment below telling us: “What is your favourite herb?” and you will be entered for a chance to win* a canola oil squeeze bottle.  The canola oil sqeeze bottle is great to keep on your counter so you can mix up a homemade vinaigrette any night of the week.

*contest closes on this post June 15, 2013. Winner will be notified via email and listed in the comment section below. Full contest rules are available here. CONTEST CLOSED

The Great Calorie Drive

One of my hobbies is teaching Zumba. Zumba Fitness, LLC has come out with a great program called the Great Calorie Drive that allows you to “donate” the calories you burn in a Zumba class to organizations that work to end hunger around the world. It’s easy, download the Zumba Fitness mobile app and “check in” to your next Zumba class. Zumba Fitness will donate US$0.14 for every 750 calories (the average amount of calories burned in a Zumba class) to the World Food Programme and other organizations that work to end hunger! Visit the website for more details. Talk about a rewarding workout! Ends June 30, so get to a Zumba class!

Salad and dessert combo

Pineapple Carrot Chiffon Cake | www.blog.canolarecipes.ca

Ellen shared these recipes on CJOB last month and they have become two of my favourites for the summer. The Black Bean & Lentil Salad with Chili-Lime Vinaigrette is the perfect salad for picnics, barbecues or packing for lunch. The Pineapple & Carrot Chiffon Cake is delicious and a must-try! Perfect for special occasions because it is such a treat.

Be sure to check out What’s for Dinner with Fiona and tell us “What is your favourite bean or lentil?” for a chance to win a canola oil squeeze bottle – great to keep on your counter so you can mix up a homemade vinaigrette any night of the week.
