Tomatoes

Tomatoes

I do not feel like my day is complete without having something tomato-ey every day: fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes in soups, tomato sauce. So in recognition of all tomato sauces, here are a few definitions you may find useful when you next dine out.

Concasse: means to crush, break or grind; tomato concasse is a barely cooked or raw sauce.

Coulis: refers to a smooth puree that has been strained.

Pomodoro: means tomato sauce (pomodoro is Italian for tomato).

Arrabita: refers to tomato sauce flavoured with chili pepper.

Puttanessca: tomato sauce flavored with capers and anchovies, and often with olives, garlic and chile flakes.

Bolognese: in the style of Bologna; usually refers to a slow-cooked meat sauce with vegetables and tomato.

Marinara: means tomato sauce with garlic, olive oil and oregano.

A batch of each, should take care of this year`s tomato bounty.  Check out a Classic Tomato Sauce Recipe below.

Apples

Fresh Apples | www.canolaeatwell.com

To me, there is nothing better than getting a big basket of fresh produce from one of my many gardening family members or friends.  Right now I’m loving the apples.  It’s fall, back to school and apple time.

I’ve shared below an excellent recipe for Chai Appple Bundt Cake.  I just love this flavour combination.  What is your favourite fall apple recipe?

Birthday Parties

Birthday party celebrations! We have a small family so for me it’s important to gather and celebrate birthdays.  At one time, I had to do it all and now since I am a little older and hopefully a little wiser, it’s about the gathering and having fun.

At our parties, we now have themes from crazy hat parties, to dress like a hippie party (got to let the kids participate in the party planning) to wear a moustache party!
