Playing Cards

Cucumber and Feta Cheese Toasts | www.canolaeatwell.com

I love gathering around the table for a good game of cards.  Lately in my family, we’ve been favouring the card game Sticks—which we play with great gusto!  That said, whether Cribbage, Canasta, Kaiser, or other, the outcome always matters far less than the company and I heartily encourage getting together soon with your family or friends for a rousing round of cards!!  And here’s my best hint: great snacks like these new simple Cucumber and Feta Cheese Toasts contribute to the companionable atmosphere, so that even my husband (who would not choose cards as his first pick) nevertheless has a fantastic time!

Chatbooks

You know all of those photo books you dream about making?!? Well, dream no longer and download Chatbooks to your smartphone or tablet. This app simplifies and streamlines the process. In less than 4 hours of my time (spread out over about a week) I had over 2 years worth of Instagram photos compiled into 10 tidy little books and shipped to my house. No, you don’t have to be in Instagram user to use the app. In fact, you can upload photos directly from your phone. It’s so simple you’ll be wondering what took you so long to get started.

Welcome to Zoë’s Crostini Bar

Recently I hosted my daughter’s bridal shower. The guests loved the crostini bar as much as I loved creating the menu. Here’s how you can have one at your next gathering.

Build a base. Crostini is basically toasted bread on which you can build a small appetizer. Or build on a gluten-free cracker, or on veggie slices – English cucumber, zucchini or al dente small potato slices are ideal.

Choose a spread. Spreads are helpful so that the rest of the toppings all have a place to sit.
Your choices include:
Ricotta cheese + salt/pepper, perhaps a little canola oil
White bean spread or plain hummus
Cashew cream – cashews soaked overnight, drained, blended with garlic clove, a little lemon juice, canola oil, salt/pepper

Select a topping.
You may choose from:
Roasted or grilled veggies – Chili flakes-flavoured Brussel sprouts, Buffalo Sauce Cauliflower, Balsamic Cherry tomatoes, or radish halves + a fairly neutral grated white cheese like mozzarella
Sliced or grated raw veggies
Pickled veggies – carrots, beans, beets
Jams & Chutneys – your favourites
Dried fruit – cherries, dates, apricots
Nuts – walnut, hazelnut or pecan pieces are tasty
Olive Tapenade or Pesto – either basil or grilled tomato

Add a drizzle to garnish. Check out the maple-flavoured glazes, the fruit syrups, or the flavoured honey.

Eat well… Raeanne, Jenn & Simone
