Homegrown Prairie Honey

This winter I had the pleasure of meeting Isabel Wendell of Wendell Estate Honey.  Their story was fascinating and I want to share part of it with you.  You will also find a delicious recipe for Honey BBQ Sauce that you can make and enjoy this BBQ season.

Wendell Estate Honey

Isabel & Tim’s Story

Isabel and Tim and have produced honey for almost 40 years.  Almost all of their honey is sold in bulk and leaves by the semi load in large metal drums out the back door of the honey house.  They have always reserved a few thousand pounds of honey that is sold locally and shared with the farmers who allow them to place hives on their land.

The birth of Wendell Estate Inc.

In 2009 Martin Neuhofer started working for us and the idea of WENDELL ESTATE started brewing.  People who use their honey are very loyal.  They say things to Isabel and Tim like “your honey is the best” or “why is your honey so different?”.

With Martin’s help by the spring of 2011 they purchased a container of glass jars from Italy, hired a design company, and finished the paper work for WENDELL ESTATE INC.

Meeting the Dragons on CBC’s Dragon’s Den

Wendell Estate Honey was presented to the Dragons on CBC television.  The Dragon’s Den experience created a flurry of activity on their newly launched e-commerece site that allows consumers to purchase small quantities of their honey.  The television exposure also generated other press coverage.

Isabel’s Thank you to Farmers

On the night that I met Isabel she shared the following message with our group:

“Now, I would like to give a shout out to all canola growers and also to clover and alfalfa growers.  We, as honey producers, love you.  We think that we have a great relationship, honey producers and canola, alfalfa and clover growers: we need you to produce our white prairie honey and our bees benefit your crops.  So, enjoy our beautiful prairie honey, produced by bees and beekeepers and farmers and their canola crops.” ~Isabel Wendell

Thank you Isabel for sharing your stroy with us and becoming a part of our community.  I look forward to watching your success grow!

Be Well…

Jenn
