Love Your Heart

Our #CanolaConnect community of Farmers and Registered Dietitians weigh in on how they love their hearts.

Healthy eating, reducing stress and staying active are among the biggest factors in caring for your heart and reducing risks for heart disease. When we asked Registered Dietitians to share how they love their hearts, their answers truly blew us away. Turns out, Dietitians don’t only focus on healthy eating!

These are simple ways to live simply and care for our hearts!

What does the Heart and Stroke Foundation say about healthy eating and reducing risk of heart disease?

Monounsaturated fats, such as those found in canola oil, have been shown to improve blood cholesterol levels. Additionally, to further protect against heart disease, we want to ensure our diets include Omega 3 fats. Sources of omega-3 fat include cold-water fish such as mackerel, sardines, herring, rainbow trout and salmon, as well as canola oil, soybean oil, omega-3 eggs, flaxseed, walnuts, pecans and pine nuts.

What makes a farmer’s heart happy?

For one, when Mother Nature cooperates. That’s not often the case though. Farming can be incredibly stressful when you order rain and are delivered sunshine or, you need the sun when it’s raining. Stress on the farm is very real, as Alberta farmer, Jeannette, has shared with us. All the careful planning and smart farm management in the world can’t help their farm through unpredictable weather conditions. This is life on the farm and managing stress levels is incredibly important for a happy heart. Jeannette’s motto for loving her heart?

“Leave stress at the farm gate.”

We also asked the President of the Manitoba Canola Growers, Chuck Fossay, to answer on behalf of the farming community and he, too, surprised us with his message. Check out what Chuck had to say.
