Summer Snacks

Bring Good Food to the Beach

Patio-Chair-cropped.jpg

Summer in Manitoba is always beautiful, and a great chance to spend time at the beach.  Unfortunately, snacks on the beach are not always the healthiest, and coolers can be awkward to carry. Here are some healthy snack ideas you can safely take to the beach without a cooler.

Trail Mix

Trail mix is a great snack, that is super easy to make and very flexible. You can add different flavours and ingredients to make this snack your own.

Grab a favourite whole grain cereal (Cheerios, Shreddies, Life), add low salted pretzels, fish crackers, dried fruit (raisins, dried cranberries or dried blueberries), and unsalted nuts like almonds.

If you want to get really creative with the flavours, mix your ingredients with some canola oil, and use flavours like dill and ranch or cinnamon and sugar.  A crunchy snack on the go.

Popcorn

Sweet Spiced Popcorn | www.canolarecipes.caPopcorn, popped on a stove-top, can be a healthy and delicious snack. If it has been air popped, it is low in fat, and high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Here are some popcorn recipes, perfect for a day at the beach.

Granola Bars

Jenn's Chewy Granola BarsGranola bars are an easy addition to your beach bag, easy to carry and a delicious snack, they can also be nutritionally dense and easy to make. Here is a recipe high in fibre and protein, which will help keep you fuller on the beach.

Roasted Chickpeas

Chickpeas are high in fibre, contain essential nutrients and are very low in fat. Toss them with some canola oil and sprinkle on your favourite spice blend. Roast them for about 30 minutes at 400F (200C) to give you a crunchy snack on the go. My spice suggestion: use a blend of cumin, chili powder and cayenne pepper, for a nice spicy snack.
