I love science.

Science guides me as a Registered Dietitian to confidently provide evidence-based answers about food and nutrition in an ever-changing environment.

To Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland, science and innovation gives our Canadian farmers the tools they need to produce healthy, nutritious and safe food for Canada and the world.  In the world marketplace, science is used to prove food grown in Canada is safe, healthy, and reliable to help make our world a healthier place.

This taco recipe is one of my go-to’s for a quick and healthy supper or lunch meal.

Grilled Cheese

It’s simple, it’s a crowd pleaser and it’s delicious – The Grilled Cheese Sandwich. What I did not know until a few years ago is that the secret to the perfect grilled exterior is actually all about the oil! I know some of you are going to tell me about mayo and that’s fun too (it also includes canola) but seriously, the simplest way to the perfect grilled cheese is skipping the butter or margarine and brushing your bread with canola oil.

If you are looking for a fun way to make your kitchen interactive the next time your host a crowd, try a grilled cheese buffet. Set out assorted meats, mustard, chutneys, cheeses, greens, nuts and delicious assorted breads. Get the grill pan going or plug in your panini press and put that crowd of amazing humans to work. Everyone stands in the kitchen anyway so why not get them involved in the meal creation. Be the talk of the kitchen and teach everyone your new grilled cheese trick using canola oil.

The combinations are endless and if you need inspiration try making this Apple Chutney and slamming it into your next sammie!

Games night!

The joy of gathering around a game like Scrabble makes my heart sing!  Sometimes, it’s just Mike and I and other times, we break into teams with the kids. The pace of the night slows down. The conversation, laughter and making up new words is so much fun.

Here are a few words to boost your scrabble score:
Quixotic (76 points) not sensible about practical matters
Chutzpah (77 points) Yiddish, unbelievable gall; insolence, audacity
Whizbang (76 points) a small high-velocity shell that makes a whizzing sound followed by a bang when it hits
