This month I am really going to love my heart!

Heart disease unfortunately affects 2.4 million Canadians and is the second leading cause of death in Canada. By making simple lifestyle choices such as eating a healthy diet, staying active, managing stress and not smoking, we can prevent 80% of premature heart disease and stroke.

Love your heart and empower yourself to make good decisions about your health. The Heart and Stroke Association is my go-to for great tools and resources as well as a place to find lots of delicious heart healthy recipes. Bon appetite!

TEACHERS!

In Alberta, February is the start of second semester for High School teachers and it’s the halfway point of the year for the rest of the grades.

Team Alberta Canola is super excited to share with our teachers the science, the taste and the story behind Canola at the annual Teachers’ Conventions being held around the province this month. We cannot wait to meet up with all of you!

Love at First Sight: Canada’s New Food Guide

Grilled Arctic Char Nicoise | www.canolaeatwell.com

It was an exciting day when I awoke to a slew of emails and social media posts announcing the arrival of the brand new ‘Canada’s Food Guide‘. Gone is the rainbow and in its place is a plate half filled with fruits and veggies – oh be still my heart. You all know my passion for filling that plate with as much fruit and veg as possible and now, the most recognized teaching tool in Canada showcases my vision and personal eating philosophy. Heart explosion.

I’m not a dietitian with expert, highly curated knowledge on diet but as a Professional Home Economist, helping families be their best includes guiding them in the kitchen. I need to stay current on the latest research, health and nutrition trends and the current ‘family’. What are their needs and what problems are they having that I can help them solve. Family meals is a large part of my professional and personal world. This new guide excites me because in my first glance it is helping to share just that – how to eat – how to be mindful, cook more often, enjoy your food and a personal favourite, eat with others. Bravo to the team of experts that have been working on this resource for what feels like forever. Now I’m sure there will be some criticism to follow (and I will be following) but at first glance, I’m in love and excited to see what else is to come.
