Word of the Year

For the past few years, I’ve shared with my community a Word of the Year and people have shared back! It’s wonderful to learn from each other.  A World of the Year is like a new year’s resolution but not.  It’s setting a yearly intention to help guide and remind me of what I want to focus on.

My #wordoftheyear is DISCOVER  My intention is to be curious and mindful of my moments of all the things, people, books, music and places that I can DISCOVER.

What is not to love about Valentines Day!  It is feast day of Saint Valentine; the celebration of light and affection. The day we celebrate romantic love, friendship and admiration by sending messages of love to partners, family and friends.  I know you will love this very simple, but moist and delicious chocolate cake, my Valentines Day gift to you!

Cooking for my family + a myth busting community

Indian-Style Chickpea and Paneer Bowl

I’m going to tell you a secret, at the end of 2019 I was in a home cooking slump. Gasp. Yes, me, a Professional Home Economist who spends her days immersed in food and food topics could not find inspiration to cook at home for almost 3 months. I know right, it sounds crazy but it’s true.

We still ate at home consuming very basic meals and you know what, we survived. We ate mostly balanced meals but sure wasn’t enjoying my time in the kitchen.

Well, it’s 2020 and I’m back in action! I’ve been recipe testing from our site and the Indian-Style Chickpeas and Paneer is a new family favourite, the freezer is refilled with homemade soup; Mushroom + Roasted Tomato Bisque and a couple of new cookbooks (Dirty Food by Julie VanRosendaal and Best of Bridge Comfort Food by Emily Richards) have me dreaming of and cooking away in the kitchen. I’m back in the flow and it feels great.

What I realized during this slump is that there are many barriers to cooking for your family (or yourself) and I’m so thankful that I have amazing folks in my community that are consistently busting food myths, explaining complicated food topics and keeping my critical thinking skills sharp. I’m talking about those that are writing pieces like: The reasons I do (and don’t) eat organic or How food labels deceive us: a look at natural. I’m thankful and lovin that these folks help me maintain confidence in food choices and purchases and at the same time keep me curious and always learning.

What food myth do you want to see busted? Do food myths keep you from confidently making food choices for yourself or family?
