Talking Biotech Podcast

Kevin Folta 2014 | www.canolaeatwell.comI’ve had the pleasure of meeting Kevin Folta on a number of occasions and the way he explains science & genetic engineering is so impactful.

The Talking Biotech Podcast is one of my favorites.  It connects the public to current science and technology topics while allowing scientists to share how science can help our farmers, industrialized world consumers, the environment and the developing world.

Kevin’s entertains and explains how new tools can improve food security, reduce poverty, and improve agricultural and medical practices.  Plug in, go for a walk and learn a bit more about science because #scienceiscool.

Family time on the Road

I love road trips with my family!  On our last trip I got out a copy of Indian Cooking Unfolded by Chef Raghavan Iyer that I received this past spring at my first #CanolaConnect event.  We began reading about spices and other ingredients commonly found in Western supermarkets that are suitable to create authentic Indian flavours.

We enjoyed reading about the relationship between coriander & cilantro (one is the seed, the other the leaf), how fennel and cumin are both members of the carrot family (similar to the relationship between canola and cabbage–both members of the brassica family), and how to extract eight flavours from a given spice. (Hint–heating in oil is one method).

My favourite, and the one that sparked the most discussion, was where cashews originated from.  Introduced to India in 1500 CE, they are grown inside a toxic shell at the end of a false fruit.  We couldn’t help but wonder how their discovery came about. The book doesn’t say, but I invite you to bring it up on your next family road trip and perhaps it will spark a discussion of your own!

Warm Hats

Vintage Hat and Canola Mitts | www.canolaeatwell.comAs soon as the air has a chill you’ll find me grabbing for my nearest hat, headband or toque. My head wear collection (obsession) has grown over the years and contains a wide assortment of styles, colours and fibres. It also blurs the line between vintage and new.

My favourite vintage hat is mink fur from the Hudson’s Bay company that I found while out thrifting. I love when an opportunity arises for me to wear it and I love giving new life to old treasures.

My biggest splurge was on a hat made by Canadian company Lillie & Cohoe when I was at Christmas in November in Alberta two years ago. November is back again and I’m thrilled to be heading to Alberta for another jam packed learning adventure with an excellent line-up of presenters at this year’s Christmas in November. Perhaps this might be my next hat adventure too! Be sure to follow along November 10-13 while I’m on site at the event.
