Ag in the City Recap

This past weekend, the weather wasn’t the only thing bringing people to The Forks.  People of all ages visited The Forks to check out Ag in the City. Games, a cooking demo, a farmer’s panel and 26 informative booths kept people busy and entertained. But most of all, visitors left with lots of new information, recipes and a knowledge of where the food they consume comes from.

Last week we gave you 10 reasons to visit Ag in the City. We hope you didn’t miss it, but in case you did, here are a few highlights:

The canola field photo booth was back again this year and it was a huge hit! As well as leaving with information on the health benefits of canola oil, and new recipes to try, visitors to the Canola Growers booth walked away with a souvenir photo of themselves in a canola field.

The event kicked off on Friday morning with a student debate on biofuels. Agriculture in the Classroom organized the debate, and the winner was decided by the full audience in attendance.

Ace Burpee was back as host and participant of So You Think You Can Farm. This year, he also took the cooking demonstration into his own hands on Saturday afternoon.

Ace Burpee wasn’t the only celebrity at Ag in the City; Mr. Bean also made an appearance. The Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Medicine (CCARM) launched a campaign earlier this year titled Consider the Bean. CCARM was at Ag in the City to talk about the campaign and were even handing out souvenir posters.

The Canadian International Grains Institute wowed people with the biodiesel trailer. Visitors were encouraged to enter the trailer to learn and watch how biodiesel is made.

It was a fantastic weekend, The Forks was abuzz with people in high spirits due to the midsummer temperatures we had. So if you missed it, we forgive you…just don’t miss it next year!
