Self-Development: What do you want out of 2011?

The most effective tool in learning is a commitment” – International Coach Academy

With January almost over, are you questioning your commitment to ‘exercise every day’; or that evening course you registered for, are you re-thinking the wisdom of that decision? Have you fallen off the path to achieving your weight loss goals?

What all these questions have in common is your underlying commitment to following through with the promises you make to yourself.  This is where a self-development plan comes in. A self-development plan is an important tool for personal leadership.  It is a powerful tool that you can use for reflection and assessment of your life’s journey. As the name suggests, this is your guide to how you wish to see your life evolve over time.

So what do you want out of 2011?  Your self-development plan will require you to actively write down your goals, or if you prefer, create a vision board using photos and other items that reflect what you desire, or you can create an audio file of your goals.

Your Self-development plan will serve you well if it is flexible and made up of goals and objectives that are your own. Too often many people embark upon a path that is not their own and the result of this often is ‘failure’. The reality is you didn’t fail at your goals; you failed at trying to commit to somebody else’s goals.  Here are some tips to create your self-development plan:

1. A description of an end point – a goal;
2. Some strategies to reach that end point;
3. Some milestones, i.e. small points of achievement along the journey that can be used as indicators of success and opportunities for celebration;
4. Timelines to measure the journey; and
5. A reflection of your learning – evaluation. – International Coach Academy

A Life Coach is a great resource to use to help create a self-development plan.  A Coach will work with you to provide tangible results and support you in transferring those results in all other aspects of your life.  A coach will support you to be accountable to your self-development goals, as well as stop to celebrate your achievements along the way.
