Be of Service

Success for all

Be of service.  Jamie Clarke recounted getting this piece of advice from his grandfather when he joined his first Mt. Everest expedition.  He spoke passionately about serving his team not for his own gain but for the success of the overall mission.

Now, you may not be planning to climb Mt. Everest but have you ever given any thought about how you can be of service to those around you?  Or in return how those around you have been of service to you?

I had the pleasure of listening to Jamie Clarke, Canadian adventurer, author, filmmaker, entrepreneur, and inspirational speaker at the Canola Council of Canada’s Conference in Vancouver.  His message around being of service to those around you has really stuck with me.

Volunteerism

As a mother of two young children, the demands to volunteer seem to be never ending.  Whether it is sitting on the daycare board, coaching sports, helping at the school, fundraising, or transporting kids the list goes on and on.  Jamie’s presentation really helped me re-frame these demands in my own life.  Looking back I can now identify so many wonderful people in my life who have selflessly been of service to me.  I now take pride in volunteering when and where I can so that I can return the favor and now be of service for my children and for my community.

National Volunteer Week

April 21-27th is National Volunteer Week, which is a time to recognize and celebrate the incredible efforts of volunteers all across Canada.  Celebrate this week by stopping to thank someone who has been of service to you or your community.  Plus, make strides to give back in anyway you can.

Agriculture in the Classroom

If you are looking for ways to get involved check out the many volunteer opportunities with Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba.  They are a wonderful organization that brings hands-on experiences to students relating to agriculture and linking them to where their food comes from.   They are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year!  A great organization with a wonderful history of service to the farming community!
