Skills Canada – May is Skills Month

Skills Canada Alberta | www.canolaeatwell.comHe was three years old when he first slipped out of his gated backyard to walk the block to my house to play with my daughter. And from that day on, his mom and I sat through rock concerts executed from the top of the picnic table, long plays where the front hallway was the stage, and finger-painting murals on newsprint taped to the backyard fence. Then he started school.

Over the next six years, he was labeled, threatened, and chastised. His parents were told that the family’s diet was poor and contributing to his attention deficit, his difficulty with reading, writing and arithmetic. Needless to say, the situation was tense.

By junior high, school remained a challenge except for the time that he spent in what was called Career and Technology Studies. He could cook and cut hair well. And as he grew older, he was allowed to study auto service and autobody repair. It was in these classes that he found his place in the world.

May is Skills month in Canada. Starting with regional, then provincial, and finally the national competition at Skills Canada, students who study computer animation, landscaping, and electrical installations, to name but a few, get their time to shine.  They love to demonstrate what they know and they love the support.

I know that we’ll be there to cheer on the culinary competitors – what would you like to see?

The Canola Learning Centre

Now more than ever our youth need opportunities to visit farms, meet farmers and learn about how food is grown.  In Manitoba, The Canola Learning Centre is where we run our free on farm tours for schools and daycares from May – August each year.

We still have a few dates available and if you know a teacher, daycare or daycamp that would be interested in bringing their children for a hands on farm learning experience then we have the tour for them!

If you are not from Manitoba and want us to help connect you with a local farmer, let us know!

Here is a sneak peek of the Canola Learning Centre:
