What We’re Lovin’ for October!

What Wendy’s Lovin’:
Soup – There are so many things to love about fall – the colours, the crunchy leaves on the ground, the anticipation for the thanksgiving long weekend, which of course brings fall comfort foods to mind. One of my favourite things about fall is making warm hearty soups. As soon as the temperatures dropped, I got right on to making soups. I have my classic favourites and lots of new recipes to try this year (keep an eye out for a post dedicated to soups later this month). I always make more than enough so I can freeze some that will come in handy on a cold, busy day later in the fall or winter.

My dad makes the best Sopa de Pollo, a latin style chicken soup. Nothing in the world brings me more comfort than a hot bowl of his soup. This Chicken Enchilada Soup comes very close when I substitute rice for corn.

Circle scarves – not only are these fashionable, they are warm, cozy and practical. They’re everywhere right now so you can find one to suit your style and price range. I have practically been living in mine for the past month, even wearing it indoors on cool days. Mine is so large I can even wear it as a shawl. So practical – what’s not to love?

What Ellen’s Lovin’:
Fall Suppers – Do you keep your fork? There are so many fall suppers and the season is now here! A website has been created to help you plan your dates and travels around the province. This is all from the people at Travel Manitoba and to my good friend Shel Zolkwich for sharing the list with me.

Fall Hikes – We love the outdoors and autumn is a great time to get out and experience nature and what better way is then to go with my family for a hike. One of our favorite places is near Pinawa. Here are a few links with map. Pinawa Trail –  Make sure you go to the swinging bridge as well.  This year, we will be checking out the old Pinawa dam trail.

Fall Fishing – Mike loves to fish and we all go as a family. So this fall, we will be out on the water, trying to catch the big one! Watch Great Tastes of Manitoba on Oct 13, 2012 and you can hear me sing my daughter’s song that always helps her land the first fish of the trip. For great pickerel recipe, try and make the Pickerel in the Paper, it’s easy, so flavourful and healthy!

What Jenn’s Lovin’:
Cinnamon – My favourite way to use cinnamon these days is to sprinkle it on my coffee grounds before I perk the coffee.  It gives my pot of morning joe a touch of sweetness without adding in the sugar.  Mmmm….Cinnamon!

Roasted Tomatoes – As the temperature starts to drop I don’t feel so bad having my my oven run for long periods of time.  Chef MJ Feeke’s Slow Roasted Local Tomatoes is the perfect way for me to use up that box of tomatoes I picked right before the hard frost.  I’ve been roasting them green, red and in between.  When I’m in a hurry I have even roasted at 350F for 2 hours, then pureed the tomatoes into a thick oven roasted tomato paste that I’ve frozen for all my fall meals.  If you follow the link you can even watch Chef MJ prepare a pan so you know exactly what to do.

Keep Well…Wendy, Ellen & Jenn
