What We’re Lovin’ for August!

What Wendy’s Lovin’:
Frozen grapes
– In this heat, any cool treat makes a good snack. One of my favourite treats that come out of the freezer is frozen grapes. It’s simple – you don’t need to add anything, just freeze your grapes for a couple of hours and you’re good to go. They’re delicious on their own, or paired with your favourite cheese.  Smoked gouda is my personal favourite with frozen grapes.

More free stuff! –
As I mentioned last month -and like any true Manitoban- I like free stuff. Especially if it involves being outdoors. That’s why I’m lovin’ the free summer music series and movies at  Assiniboine Park. Who doesn’t love live outdoor music and movies? You can enjoy free music at the Lyric Theatre every Thursday and Sunday. Plus for all you jazz fans, you can catch some fabulous local jazz acts every Sunday at the Leo Mol. And something I’m really excited about is the movies. There are two options every Friday night in August, an early feature at 7 p.m. and a late feature at 9:15 p.m. Visit the Assiniboine Park website for the full schedule. So grab a friend, take your family and enjoy this weather while it lasts. Don’t forget to bring along some homemade snacks.

What Jenn’s Lovin’:
Scaredy Squirrel Adventures – what kid or grown up doesn’t like a good summer book?  My kids summer reading pick is anything with the quirky Scaredy Squirrel.  You can follow Scaredy on Facebook  but we really like a good ol’ book.  We just picked up Scaredy Squirrel at the Beach for our collection.  As a parent I love these books because you can have them be a quick read or you can turn the book into a 20 minute adventure while you ask questions and analyze all the detail.

My Bread Maker – After hearing the passion in Ellen about her bread maker I went on the hunt for one of my own.  It turned out that a family member had an extra one that they were willing to give me – score!  It took me a couple of weeks to get going as I was rather intimidated by this machine but now that we’ve made friends, fresh bread is a staple at my house.  Now, I just need to buy more flour!  Our favourite loaf so far is a Whole-Grain Cinnamon Raisin.  I will share the recipe with you soon!

What Ellen’s Lovin’:
Roasted Vegetables
– on the “Machine” or the grill or the BBQ.    We have been slicing and dicing all types of vegetables from zucchini, to red, orange and green peppers, cherry tomatoes, red onions, mushrooms and eggplant.   Drizzle with canola oil, add in some fresh herbs from the garden and grill away until soften and slightly charred.  We eat them at supper as a side dish and then I made a salad for lunch the next day.

Stardust Drive In Theatre – “Come Out and Watch the Movies on the BIG Screen Under the Stars!” The Stardust Drive In Theatre operates every weekend from the May long weekend through to the September long weekend. May to June – Fridays and Saturdays only. July to September – Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Triple Feature Nights: On the Sunday of each long weekend there are 3 movies shown in one night.

Thanks to my friends at Hot 103 for letting me know this.  I can’t wait to check it out with my family.

Folklorama – We go every year to a few different pavilions for the food and entertainment at Folklorama.  Of course, we always go to support our families at the Scandinavian, Slovenija and Ethiopian pavilions.

Be Well…Wendy, Jenn & Ellen
