Citrus –  Lemons & Limes

I am lovin’ all the ways you can use citrus. They are so versatile.   Zest them, juice them, slice them, bake with them, use them in making a vinaigrette or marinade, add them to drinks or make fresh lemonade with them.  The perfect addition to summer time baking and cooking.  I always have fresh lemons and limes on hand in my fridge.  I just wish a had a lemon tree!

Eating more plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, peas, whole grains and legumes just makes sense to me.  Numerous studies have shown that it may be better for our health to eat fewer animal foods and fill our plates with plant-based foods. Even our newly revised Canada’s Food Guide is promoting Canadians to move towards this style of eating.

Don’t be fooled though with some of the new marketed plant-based burgers and sausage meat substitutes.  Many of these foods are higher in fat, sodium, and lower in fibre than you think they would be.  Be sure to always read the label, and if you can cook from home more often.

Asparagus

It’s in season and there is so much you can do with it. Keep it simple, grill it and drizzle with balsamic vinegar, make a pizza or on a rainy day make a batch of asparagus soup.  Home made soup with fresh asparagus – it doesn’t get any better that that! What’s your favourite asparagus recipe?

  1. I cook our dinners mostly on the grill during the summer. So burgers,steak,chicken,hot dogs,turkey and whatever else the family wants.

  2. Everything is on our grill. From asparagus to burgers. Peppers. Onions. Chicken. Sausage too. Those white bean burgers sound delicious too.

  3. Love grilling peppers & zucchini, however no longer have a working BBQ. Also, tried to enter my email for the newsletters, but no where to put it ???

  4. We love grilling shrimp and wings,burgers and of course steak, and veggies taste so much better cooked on the grill as well!

  5. When the weather is nice, I’ll grill just about anything. Fresh vegetables, any kind of fish or meat and some fruit.

  6. I would love asparagus soup. I wonder if the family would notice asparagus on pizza. Grilled asparagus sounds delicious.

  7. We had BBQ ribs with homemade sauce! Corn on the cob, coleslaw, asparagus for dinner and it was delicious.

  8. Mmmmm I’m going to have to try the Asparagus Pizza! Everything but the kitchen sink goes on our grill. Pizza, chicken, beef, pork, venison, moose and veggies of all kinds. I’ve even grilled Pineapple slices.

  9. We have Jumbo shrimp and steaks on the BBQ. We are having a tossed salad with homemade dressing and garlic bread with it. I love the recipes I find on the CanolaEatWell site.They are so yummy to try.

  10. With local asparagus and nugget potatoes now in season, we will be enjoying that with a grilled salmon!

  11. Zucchini and eggplant – brushed with canola oil and sprinkled with dried oregano. Great side dish for with chicken souvlaki – also on the grill !

  12. We had sandwiches for dinner tonight and had company over. Our bbq caught fire a couple weeks ago so for now it’s just using the indoor grilltop we have for our stove.
